Interesting view and in many ways correct too. However, mechanical / automatic watches are the first choice of those who truly will or encounter extreme conditions. For example, most diving watches are automatics. Why? Because the mechanical movement is less effected by extreme temperatures. Mechanical watch will survive where quartz movement will suffer or even fail. Accuracy? Very true....quartz wstches are way more accurate. BUT, from practical point, lets look at accuracy applicable to a real life. Lets asume you have an atomic watch...super accurate....so you can be where ever you need to be exactly on time. But, what is it good for when everybody else will be either 2 or 3 or 5 minutes early or late? The atomic accuracy is practical only if everybody else had also atomic watch. And even then, people would not arriving at meetings on time. Botom line is that time is relative and the atomic accuracy is just a perk for those who like to have the feeling of "unsurpassed accuracy". Mechanical watched provide us with a practical accuracy needed for everyday life.

Well said. I agree with most of what you said, and in fact have seen no purpose in owning a watch for the past 10 years (because of time display on mobile phontes, etc.). Recently, though, I came to appreciate Citizen's EcoDrive atomic time-sync watches, and I purchased a Chrono-Time AT model. To me, those features add valuable functionality at a reasonable price. Reading about Seiko's Springdrive was interesting--I was unaware of it.
