Drawing of a tethered locust with electromyographic recording electrodes inserted into the flight muscles (forewing first basalar muscles). The thin electrode wires (which are wrapped around the tether) are each 50 micrometer diameter copper wire that has a laquor coating. The tough cuticle of the locust is pierced with a pin before the wires are inserted. The wires are held in place with small drops of bees wax.
