{"id":127,"date":"2006-10-22T23:04:55","date_gmt":"2006-10-23T04:04:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thegatesofdawn.ca\/wordpress\/electronics\/myoelectric-locust-mel\/"},"modified":"2021-04-12T23:06:30","modified_gmt":"2021-04-13T04:06:30","slug":"mel","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.thegatesofdawn.ca\/wordpress\/electronics\/mel\/","title":{"rendered":"Myoelectric Locust (MEL)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Probably my craziest project was suggested by my biologist friend Jeff.\u00a0 The idea, based on Jeff&#8217;s research in insect nervous systems and flight, involved augmenting your garden-variety locust with electrodes implanted in its wing muscles, electric motors and wheels.\u00a0 The result was the Myoelectric Locust.\u00a0 When Jeff first suggested it, I reacted with horror, as you probably are now.\u00a0 But we ended up doing it anyway, in a marathon hacking session of a weekend, plus two very late nights (I was working my regular job on Monday and Tuesday.)<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Jeff's MEL page\" href=\"\/MEL\/index.html\">Here<\/a> are the pages that Jeff put together documenting our insanity.\u00a0 The video links are probably broken right now.<\/p>\n<p>We got some press coverage out of that one.\u00a0 Our fifteen minutes of infamy.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"When Locusts Attack\" href=\"http:\/\/science.slashdot.org\/article.pl?sid=00\/10\/09\/0528216\">Story<\/a> on Slashdot.<\/li>\n<li>Article in Wired News. My firsthand experience with being misquoted.<\/li>\n<li>There was an article on <a title=\"Russian site\" href=\"http:\/\/dz.yandex.ru\">dz.yandex.ru<\/a> in Russian about it.\u00a0 (The link is broken now, and my Russian isn&#8217;t good enough to find a new one.)
